Y-passing pattern with third man and finish
Y-shaped passing sequence: support, lay-off to the third man and a pass into space to finish against the keeper. A pre-season classic for passing, movement and timing.
Step 1Apoyo
1 / 3
El 1 pasa al 2, que baja a recibir.
Objective
Automate the support, lay-off, third-man sequence with one-touch passes and arrive at the finish with the ball on the run.
Organisation
Starting cone 35 m from goal with balls. Two support players 12 m away forming the V of the Y (one each side) and a central cone at 20 m. Keeper in goal. Players rotate following the direction of their pass.
Development
- 1The starting player (1) passes to the left support (2), who has dropped to receive, and follows the pass.
- 2Player 2 lays off first time to the central player (3), who has come to meet the ball.
- 3Player 3 plays first time to the right support (4), who has run diagonally into the space between the cones and the goal.
- 4Player 4 controls on the run and finishes with a maximum of two touches against the keeper.
- 5Rotation: 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, and the finisher collects the ball and returns to the start. Switch the side of the Y every four minutes to finish with both feet.
Coaching points4
- Support players move late and fast: away first, then towards the ball.
- Lay off with the foot furthest from the imaginary defender, body open to the third man.
- The through pass goes in front of the runner, never to feet.
- Finish with the head up: look at the keeper before the last touch.
Common mistakes3
- Support players arriving too early and receiving standing still.
- Soft passes breaking the rhythm of the sequence.
- The runner going before the ball travels to the third man and ending up offside.
Variations3
- Add a passive defender on the central support.
- Finish with a cross and header instead of a shot.
- One-touch finish after the through pass.
Progressions2
- Active defender on the last pass to demand precision and timing.
- Add a second ball for continuous tempo.
Regressions2
- Shorter distances and free touches at each station.
- No keeper and no finish: end with a control and a pass back to the start.
Tips
- Use different cone colours for the Y to explain the rotation.
- Enough balls at the start so the rhythm never drops.
