Crosses from both wings with attackers, a defender and a second goal

Two keepers defend two goals inside the box while crosses arrive alternately from both wings past mannequins that block the view, with two attackers and a defender. Come, catch or command the clearance, then distribute into the mini goals.

Crosses from both wings with attackers, a defender and a second goal

Objective

Decide on every cross whether to come and catch or stay and organise the clearance, communicating clearly with the defender, and turn the catch into a quick distribution to a target.

Organisation

Penalty area with the full-size goal and a second portable goal placed at the top corner of the six-yard box facing the pitch. Two mannequins on the six-yard line obstructing the view. One server on each wing with balls, two attackers in the box, one defender (depending on numbers) and two working keepers, one in each goal. Two mini goals 25-30 yards out as distribution targets.

Development

  1. 1Server 1 crosses from his wing; the two attackers attack the ball and can score in either goal, so both keepers must be ready.
  2. 2The keeper the cross is heading for decides: if he can catch it he comes with a loud 'keeper!' and attacks the ball at its highest point; if it is outside his zone he calls 'away!' and directs the defender to clear.
  3. 3If the keeper claims the ball he distributes immediately by hand or foot into either mini goal.
  4. 4Without a pause, server 2 crosses from the opposite wing alternating inswingers and outswingers; the decision is repeated.
  5. 5Every four crosses the keepers swap goals and, after two rotations, the attackers and defender rotate.
  6. 6Progression: when one keeper claims, the other sets for a shot from the coach on the edge of the box.

Coaching points4

  • Inside leg drives into the catch, outside leg bent to protect the body.
  • Catch the ball at its highest point, attacking it forward with aggression.
  • Clear, loud communication to the defender: 'keeper!' or 'away!' before the ball reaches the contested zone.
  • If the catch is not on, prepare immediately for the next phase: the finish or the second ball.

Common mistakes3

  • Hesitating between coming and staying and ending up in no man's land.
  • Calling late, when the defender has already decided to clear.
  • Catching and standing still instead of looking for the distribution.

Variations3

  • Without the second goal: both keepers work alternately in the full-size goal.
  • Servers cross after a dribble to vary the timing of the delivery.
  • Attackers can only score with headers.

Progressions2

  • A third server on the edge of the box fires a shot at the free keeper when the other one claims.
  • Add a second defender and play 2v2 in the box with the keeper organising.

Regressions2

  • Hand-thrown crosses and passive attackers.
  • Remove the mannequins to clear the keeper's view.

Tips

  • Alternate the serving foot to get inswinging and outswinging crosses.
  • Pair attackers and keepers of similar height and level for the aerial duels.
