Cruyff's 4v1 rondo (Ajax)
The foundational rondo of the Ajax-Cruyff school: four possession players on the sides of a 10x10 m square against one defender inside. Slide along your own side, pass with the far foot, and whoever loses the ball goes in the middle.
El 1 abre el juego al 2; el recuperador no presiona hasta que el balón viaja.
Objective
Learn to offer passing lines by moving along your own side, pass with quality and a good first touch, and deceive the defender with feints before passing.
Organisation
10x10 m square marked with four discs. Four possession players, one per side, who may only travel left to right along their own side without stepping inside. One defender in a bib inside. Spare balls next to the grid and several grids running in parallel so nobody waits.
Development
- 1The first pass is free: the defender may not press until the ball has travelled once.
- 2From then on, the four possession players circulate the ball and the defender presses hard.
- 3Possession players slide along their side to open the passing line the defender is blocking: if the short pass is closed, play long to the opposite side.
- 4When the defender touches the ball, or a pass leaves the square or is so poor that it causes the loss, the player responsible swaps roles with the defender.
- 5Sets of 3-4 minutes; count consecutive passes and let the group record set the tempo.
Coaching points4
- Supporting angles: never in line with the defender, keep moving until you see the ball carrier clearly.
- Pass with the foot furthest from the defender and take a first touch oriented towards the next pass.
- Feint the pass before playing it to unbalance the defender.
- Keep the ball moving: never let it die under your foot.
Common mistakes3
- Possession players standing still in the corner of their side instead of sliding to give a line.
- Lofted or overhit passes that force an extra touch.
- The defender running straight at the ball without closing a passing line with the body.
Variations3
- With hands (no throws above head height) for the youngest players.
- A feint is compulsory before every pass.
- Two touches maximum, then one touch.
Progressions2
- Move to 4v2 in the same square once they string 15 passes together regularly.
- Double points for a pass across the square in front of the defender.
Regressions2
- 12x12 m square and unlimited touches.
- The defender may only intercept, not tackle the ball carrier.
Tips
- Set up as many grids as needed: five players per grid and nobody waiting.
- Count passes out loud to keep it competitive.
