Traffic lights: dribbling on colour signals
Foundation game (U4-U8): everyone dribbles around the island and the coach holds up a coloured disc. Green, dribble fast; amber, turn and burst away; red, stop the ball with the sole. Heads must come up to see the colour.
Step 1Verde
1 / 3
Disco verde: conducir rápido con toques largos por el espacio libre.
Objective
Introduce dribbling with small and big touches, stopping with the sole and turning, forcing players to dribble with the head up to read a visual cue.
Organisation
16x18 m square marked with cones (“the island”; outside is the sea). One ball per player. The coach stands on one side holding three discs: red, amber (orange) and green. At first the coach calls the colour; later only holds it up without speaking.
Development
- 1Everyone dribbles freely around the island without falling into the sea (leaving the square).
- 2Green: dribble fast with big touches into free space, without bumping into anyone.
- 3Amber: change direction with a turn (sole, inside or outside) and burst away for 5-10 m.
- 4Red: stop the ball immediately with the sole and stand still on it; the last to stop does five toe taps (or the coach counts “three, two, one”).
- 5Progressions of 2-3 minutes: P1 one foot only (inside and outside, “big toe and little toe”); P2 both feet alternating; P3 specific turns on amber (inside cut, outside cut, drag-back, 360 turn).
- 6Final phase: the coach stops speaking and only shows the disc; anyone who misses it loses a point.
Coaching points4
- Lots of small touches for control; big touches only when there is free space.
- Stop the ball with the sole, not the toe, with the weight on the standing leg.
- Head up every two or three touches to see the disc and the other players.
- On amber, turn into free space, not towards the crowd.
Common mistakes3
- Always watching the ball and missing the colour change.
- Stopping the ball with the toe so it rolls away.
- Running without the ball when green appears.
Variations3
- Add animal movements on red (frog, crab) for the youngest.
- Blue: swap balls with the nearest teammate.
- White: play the ball through a teammate's legs (nutmeg).
Progressions2
- Visual signal only, no voice; the coach moves around to force players to look everywhere.
- SoccerXpert bumper cars: on green, avoid everyone in a smaller space.
Regressions2
- Two colours only (red and green) and a bigger space.
- Rolling the ball with the hand for U4-U5.
Tips
- Use the story (island, sea, sharks) so the youngest understand the boundaries.
- Change colours quickly so there are lots of stops and starts.
