3v2 attack with decision making and finish
Waves of three attackers against two defenders from the halfway line towards a goal with a keeper. The player on the ball must decide between dribbling, passing to the support or to the runner depending on the defenders' reaction.
El 9 conduce recto al defensor; el 7 y el 11 abren en diagonal.
Objective
Train decision making in attacking overloads: fix the defender with the dribble, pick the right pass and finish before defensive help arrives.
Organisation
Quarter pitch with goal and keeper. Three attackers start from three cones 10 m apart at the halfway line; two defenders wait at the edge of the box. Balls at the central cone. An extra defender may recover on the coach's signal.
Development
- 1The central attacker dribbles at the defenders while the two wide players open up and offer diagonally.
- 2If the defender steps to the ball, the dribbler passes to the free team-mate; if the defender waits, the dribbler keeps going until the defender commits.
- 3The wave ends with a finish within eight seconds; over the time, the attempt does not count.
- 4After the action the attackers become defenders for the next wave and the defenders go out.
- 5Score between two teams: a goal is one point, a goal after a pass to a runner is two.
Coaching points4
- Dribble fast and straight at the defender to force a decision.
- Wide players offer diagonally, never level with the dribbler.
- Pass the moment the defender commits, not before or after.
- Finish the move: after the pass, follow in for the rebound.
Common mistakes3
- Passing too early and giving the defenders time.
- Dribbler watching the ball and missing the run.
- Support players stopping to wait for the pass.
Variations3
- A recovering defender starts behind the attackers on the coach's signal.
- Start with a pass from the keeper to the central attacker.
- Two-touch limit for the dribbler.
Progressions2
- 3v3 with one defender arriving late.
- Reduce the maximum time to six seconds.
Regressions2
- 3v1 for the first minutes.
- Passive defenders until the attacker reaches the edge of the box.
Tips
- Stop the wave and ask what the options were when a decision is wrong.
- Balanced groups of three so everyone dribbles through the middle.
