Objective

Automate the team's zonal defensive and pressing shape: distances between lines, collective shift towards the ball, closing passing lines and cover shadows, with clear references and no live opposition.

Organisation

Full pitch. The team (red) in a 4-4-2 with a keeper. Three or four blue players (or mannequins) placed as opposition references, each with a stationary ball in a marked zone: left wing, centre and right wing in the opposition's build-up area. The coach names the active zone and the team organises as if the ball were in play there.

Development

  1. 1Starting position: mid block with the defensive line 35 m from goal and no more than 25 m between defence and forwards.
  2. 2The coach calls zone A (the opposition's left wing): the nearest forward presses the reference ball carrier, the wide midfielder jumps to the support player, the whole block shifts to that side and closes the inside pass; the far side tucks in.
  3. 3Zone B (central): the two forwards form a pair that blocks the pass between the two centre-backs, the central midfielders protect the inside lane and the defence compacts.
  4. 4Zone C (right wing): mirror image of zone A.
  5. 5Chain zone changes every 5-8 seconds; then the coach dribbles a real ball around the pitch and the team shifts continuously; correct with the voice and with freezes to show the distances.

Coaching points4

  • The block moves as one piece: when the ball goes back, the line steps up in the same instant.
  • Maximum 25 m between the defensive line and the forwards: a stretched block cannot press.
  • Every player uses his cover shadow to block the most dangerous passing line, not just to run at the ball.
  • Deliberately leave one side open and close the other: the wing is offered as a trap.

Common mistakes3

  • Late shift by the far side, leaving the switch of play free.
  • Forwards pressing without the block behind them and ending up isolated.
  • Defensive line dropping off a stationary ball instead of holding its height.

Variations3

  • Run the same sequence in the team's own system (4-3-3, 3-5-2).
  • Sacchi's classic format: keeper, four defenders and two midfielders against 11 with a live ball, then keeper and four defenders against 11.
  • Replace the balls with flags or poles in the zones.

Progressions2

  • Blue players pass the ball among themselves at slow tempo and the block reacts in real time.
  • Add a live ball played by the coach with the blues on two touches and allow the regain.

Regressions2

  • Only the back four and the two central midfielders (6+1) with two zones.
  • Freeze each position for 10 seconds and correct before changing zone.

Tips

  • Sacchi had the team play a whole game with an imaginary ball, telling them where it was: call the commands out loud for the whole squad.
  • Cone the 25 m lines so players can see the distances.
